Adding AdSense to Your Blog

You may have heard about people making hundreds of dollars just by blogging, and you’d love to get in on that.  You may have even started your own blog, but after a few dozen posts, you realize you don’t know how to make any money at it.  Well, it’s actually very easy: just sign up for Google’s AdSense program.  AdSense is a special type of advertising program that actually scans your website or blog content and then generates ads that fit with what you’ve written about.  If you blog about shoes, for example, you’ll find that Google gives you ads for shoe stores or shoe sales.

To sign up, just go to Google’s AdSense page (adsense.google.com) and create an account.  You’ll have to submit your blog URL and be approved before you can ads to your site, and this may take a couple of days.  If your blog is hosted on Blogger, however, the approval process may take significantly shorter (Google owns Blogger, which probably helps expedite the process).

Once approved, you’ll find a number of tutorials instructing you on how you can add AdSense to your website or blog.  These tutorials feature different sizes and styles of ads, so you can find one that best fits your site.  Just remember that you can only have a certain number of ads on each page.  There are also a number of rules governing the program: you can’t, for example, use AdSense on websites that sell alcohol or feature excessive amounts of profanity.  However, once you are approved for one website, you can place AdSense ads on any other site as long as it follows the guidelines.

Of course, the only real way to generate revenue with AdSense is to get people to view your blog and, more importantly, click the ads.  This means you’ll have to blog a lot and you’ll have to leave comments on other people’s blogs.  If you just dedicate about an hour to this a week, you should do fairly well.  Just remember that you can’t click on the ads yourself—that constitutes fraud and can lead to Google revoking your AdSense privileges.

Start-Up Costs for an Online Business

Starting a new online business may not have as many start-up costs as a brick and mortar business does, but it still has some costs.  If you can work out of your home, you won’t have to rent a building or deal with any of the costs associated with it, and you may not need to invest in flyers, magazine ads, or other forms of offline advertising.  Here are some of the things you may need to invest in to start your own online business.

•    A fast internet connection.  Since you’ll be doing everything online, you’ll want a secure, reliable, fast internet connection.  You’re definitely going to have to have more than dial-up.

•    Software.  You may need to invest in a website building program like DreamWeaver, and you may need a graphics program if you plan on making your own website banners and such.

•    Server space.  You’ll need to either have a dedicated web server to host your files on (and this brings up other costs, such as a static IP address and software for your server), or you’ll have to pay for server space each year.

•    Your website domain name.  You’ll need to reserve your website address.  Sometimes this is included with your server space, but sometimes you have to purchase it separately.

•    Online advertising.  Many times, you can find places to advertise your online business for free, but there are some times you may want to pay for advertising.

•    Your business registration.  Even though it’s an online business, you still need to register as an official business.  Often, there are some start-up fees involved in this, and there are some reoccurring fees you have to pay each you.  The amount varies from location to location, however, so you will need to look into the costs in your area.

Website Design Tips

Building your online business mostly hinges on one thing: getting people to visit your website and purchase your products.  However, if you don’t have a good website, your visitors may not stay on it for very long.  Here are several website design tips that can help attract and, more importantly, keep people on your webpage.

•    Keep it simple whenever possible.  People don’t want to wade through animated graphics, flashing text, or tons and tons of java or flash scripts to get to your products.  They want to easily be able to find what they want right away.  A simple website that is easy to navigate will be more popular than a confusing, complex site.

•    Be careful whenever you use flash, JavaScript, or any other type of plug-in.  Some people actually still use older internet browsers that can’t handle some of the newer plug-ins.  Sometimes, these plug-ins slow down the loading of your site, too, or can cause errors on some computers.  Use them as sparingly as you can.

•    Don’t go overboard with colours.  Since this is a professional site, make certain your colour scheme is something that isn’t too crazy—no neon greens or pinks, for example.  Also, keep the same colour scheme throughout.  You want each page on your website to be visually the same so that users aren’t distracted by randomly changing colours, layout, or graphics.  It also helps to create a standard logo that is used on your site, your marketing items, and other places.

•    Beware of using too many high resolution images.  The larger the image file is, the longer it will take for visitors to download and view.  Make certain your images are saved in a format that is quick to download, such as .gif.

•    Finally, navigation is important.  All of your links need to clearly state where they’re going.  You don’t want any “mystery meat” navigation, a term used for links that don’t really describe what site they link to.  Be sure your visitors know where they’re going to be sent when they click on links.

Keeping Focused on Work

Starting an online business and making money while working from home sounds like a dream come true, and for many, it is.  However, there’s one very important factor that you must consider before you try this risky business venture (and, no doubt about it, it is risky to start your own business).  That factor is your focus.

What do I mean by focus?  Basically, you will be your own boss, and the only person who is going to drive you to do any work is yourself.  You’ve got to be focused on your work or you may discover that you’re simply not making any money.  This is one of the quickest ways for your business to fail.  Here are some ways to keep focused on your job.

First, set aside a decided block of time to work.  One benefit from owning your own business is that you can set your own schedule, but be sure that you do actually set one.  If you know that between 9:00 am and 2:30 pm is your work time, don’t let yourself get off with only working an hour or so.  Sure, you may need to break your workday up into several sections if you have children or need to run errands, but don’t let yourself get away with slacking off.

Another good habit is to get in the practice of working in the same room or area.  Even if you have a laptop, always try to do your work at your desk.  This way, you’ll get in the habit of knowing that sitting at your desk means it’s time to work.  When you’re surfing the internet or using the computer for pleasure, move to a different chair or room.  This helps define the boundaries between free time and work and will help you focus.

If you generally use one computer for your online business and another for pleasure, consider deleting everything on the business computer that’s not work related, especially games.  Also block some internet sites that you know will distract you such as social networking sites.

Don’t work with the television on.  While it can be helpful to play music while you work, television shows only serve as a distraction.  Turn off the TV or, better yet, don’t even have a television in your home office.

These are just a few ways you can prevent yourself from being distracted while working from home.  Remember, there’s no one else to pick up the slack, so it’s up to you to keep yourself on track and make certain your work gets done.

Marketing Your Website Offline

You can’t make any money from your online business unless you get people to your website.  There are many different ways to go about doing that, but most people limit themselves.  They think that marketing a website is only done online, but there are actually ways of marketing your website offline that are just as useful.

First, if you own an actual brick and mortar store in addition to your website, you’ve got many potential marketing possibilities.  You can simply add your website address to your fliers, receipts, bags, and more.  You can also post it on any signs you have in your store or advertisements you place in the phone book and other locations.  Obviously, there are a lot of ways you can inform your customers of your website; however, these customers are already shopping at your store.  You want to bring in new customers to your site, so while this is a good way of getting people to your website, it’s not going to increase your profits that much.

For that, you need to attract brand new customers to your website.  There are a few things you can do in offline marketing to accomplish this goal.  The first is to make promotional materials to distribute.  These can be given out at any event related to your business.  You can also spread these promotional materials around.  No matter what you do with them, as long as they get out there, you’ll get people to your website.

Also, be sure to put your website on your business cards.  Your business cards are one of the best ways to get your site out there, especially to potential business partners and other professionals.  Just be sure to hand out your business cards.  It does no good to put your website on your business cards if you don’t hand out those cards.

All in all, while marketing your website offline shouldn’t be your only form of marketing, it can be a great way of getting your site out there and bringing in new customers.

Joining an Affiliate Program

Starting your own online business can be somewhat expensive.  You’ll need to have an existing line of products set up to sell and ship off, and you may have to spend a good amount of money on building up this inventory.  However, there is one way you can make money without the up-front cost of inventory.

One of these ways is to join an affiliate program.  These programs are usually run by other companies that produce products.  Here’s how an affiliate program works.  Your internet business partners with this other company.  This company makes all of the products, but they don’t sell or market them.  That’s where you come in.  You market their products by incorporating their online shopping system into your own website.  When people visit your site and purchase products, you get a percentage of the total sale.  In return, the other company doesn’t have to pay for marketing.

Many of these affiliate programs also offer bonuses for those partners who reach certain quotas each month.  Many also provide their partner companies with marketing tools, promotional ads, and more to assist them in getting visitors to their website.  Some also help you design your website or even host your site for free.

Joining an affiliate program may not be what you want to do with your online site.  After all, you’re still working for another company in a way.  However, joining an affiliate can teach you how to do online marketing.  One good way to get some experience in online marketing and promotions is to join an affiliate, work with them for six months or so, and then leave the program.  This way, you get the experience, some marketing tools, and a little bit of extra money while you’re learning.
