Keeping Focused on Work
Posted January 7th, 2009 by AnthonyStarting an online business and making money while working from home sounds like a dream come true, and for many, it is. However, there’s one very important factor that you must consider before you try this risky business venture (and, no doubt about it, it is risky to start your own business). That factor is your focus.
What do I mean by focus? Basically, you will be your own boss, and the only person who is going to drive you to do any work is yourself. You’ve got to be focused on your work or you may discover that you’re simply not making any money. This is one of the quickest ways for your business to fail. Here are some ways to keep focused on your job.
First, set aside a decided block of time to work. One benefit from owning your own business is that you can set your own schedule, but be sure that you do actually set one. If you know that between 9:00 am and 2:30 pm is your work time, don’t let yourself get off with only working an hour or so. Sure, you may need to break your workday up into several sections if you have children or need to run errands, but don’t let yourself get away with slacking off.
Another good habit is to get in the practice of working in the same room or area. Even if you have a laptop, always try to do your work at your desk. This way, you’ll get in the habit of knowing that sitting at your desk means it’s time to work. When you’re surfing the internet or using the computer for pleasure, move to a different chair or room. This helps define the boundaries between free time and work and will help you focus.
If you generally use one computer for your online business and another for pleasure, consider deleting everything on the business computer that’s not work related, especially games. Also block some internet sites that you know will distract you such as social networking sites.
Don’t work with the television on. While it can be helpful to play music while you work, television shows only serve as a distraction. Turn off the TV or, better yet, don’t even have a television in your home office.
These are just a few ways you can prevent yourself from being distracted while working from home. Remember, there’s no one else to pick up the slack, so it’s up to you to keep yourself on track and make certain your work gets done.
