Website Design Tips

Building your online business mostly hinges on one thing: getting people to visit your website and purchase your products.  However, if you don’t have a good website, your visitors may not stay on it for very long.  Here are several website design tips that can help attract and, more importantly, keep people on your webpage.

•    Keep it simple whenever possible.  People don’t want to wade through animated graphics, flashing text, or tons and tons of java or flash scripts to get to your products.  They want to easily be able to find what they want right away.  A simple website that is easy to navigate will be more popular than a confusing, complex site.

•    Be careful whenever you use flash, JavaScript, or any other type of plug-in.  Some people actually still use older internet browsers that can’t handle some of the newer plug-ins.  Sometimes, these plug-ins slow down the loading of your site, too, or can cause errors on some computers.  Use them as sparingly as you can.

•    Don’t go overboard with colours.  Since this is a professional site, make certain your colour scheme is something that isn’t too crazy—no neon greens or pinks, for example.  Also, keep the same colour scheme throughout.  You want each page on your website to be visually the same so that users aren’t distracted by randomly changing colours, layout, or graphics.  It also helps to create a standard logo that is used on your site, your marketing items, and other places.

•    Beware of using too many high resolution images.  The larger the image file is, the longer it will take for visitors to download and view.  Make certain your images are saved in a format that is quick to download, such as .gif.

•    Finally, navigation is important.  All of your links need to clearly state where they’re going.  You don’t want any “mystery meat” navigation, a term used for links that don’t really describe what site they link to.  Be sure your visitors know where they’re going to be sent when they click on links.
